Runrig - before and after Donnie

It is only a couple of weeks to go now, before my wife and I drive up to Loch Ness to one of Scotland's oldest and most popular bands, Runrig, in concert. Having secured the tickets way back last December, it has been a long wait, but I am thoroughly looking forward to spending a day at the banks of Scotland's second most famous clump of water, after Loch Lomond that is!

Runrig, back in 1991, did a similar gig, on the banks of Loch Lomond. It was an all day affair, with a wide range of support acts, including the Irish band, HotHouseFlowers. That was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and even today, when I listen to their music I am reminded of that day. Seen them plenty of times at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, but their indoor gigs never really matched their outdoor spectacles.

However, I am a little concerned about this particular concert.

The YouTube clip I put in there, is of the original lead singer Donnie Munro. Like many bands, he left to persue other interests (namely politics) and Bruce Guthro stepped into his role. Now don't get me wrong, he does an admirable job, (see for yourself below, same song, concert venue, different lead singers), but when I watch this, I don't get the sense I am watching Runrig, but instead just some elaborate karoke event.

One bonus regarding the Loch Ness gig, is that there will be a limited edition whisky, signed by the band, available for purchase. Hurrah!
